Hi James - I would say you are on the right track, but that if you look at the context of this section in Matthew, it is the sonship of Jesus that is emphasized. For example, take a look at the transfiguration, the confession of Peter and the confession after the storm. So I think that it is Jesus' sonship that is probably in play. Peter gets in on it because he is associated with Jesus.

I too am trying to make sense of this passage and your blog has been helpful. For me the key point is that Jesus said to Peter that he was a son. Well if the tribute was a God tax then Jesus seems to be em-phasing to Peter that he is a son of God. Do you think Mathew was the tax collector?

Its not there...simple as that. Not there least of all because the only person that said it was is a known fraudster who has been labelled as such even by other creationists who observed him personally creating frauds and were in many cases dragged kicking and screaming into those frauds.

Basically this is total nonsense...

One of Wyatts more lunatic assertions was that he had discovered Iron from the rivets holding the ark together.... this despite the fact that Noahs Ark according to biblical chronology was build before the Iron Age! Even so there area list of letters from creationists labeling Wyatt a fraud, relaying accounts of their experiences with the man and his ways, and still pointing out that although there is iron all over Mt. Ararat (natural deposits), they still haven't realised you can't smelt Iron in a bronze age civilization!

Its all utter nonsense...and becoming silly dangerous nonsense as people start to take actions on it.... in many cases literally interpreting the Bible will kill you... so grow up!

This political go-round is about economics, who caused our situation and what theoretical format will bring about a solution. On the one hand the government, as it supposedly represents the people, claims the moral high ground distributing a compassionate solution with everybody's money but no realistic plan for reestablishing future viability. The Republican format is to seek solid economic foundations, with indifference to present distress (lack of compassion, difficult road, cross your fingers, etc) trusting that the community will take up the slack. Perhaps a sloppy description but WWJD?

Hi Tim - Are you sure God is really "definate" about this apostrophe question? :0)

But worshiping God as described in a book (really, a historical tradition) is not the same thing as "worshiping a book". My question to you would be, what do you know about what Peter believed that is not written in the book? And, the biggie, what guides your notion of what Peter believed and worshiped if not the book? If you appeal to personal experience or insight, then that's great for you (I mean that sincerely), but it doesn't carry any real weight for those who have not shared your experience.
